CBC Radio One announces the start of its new fall season, launching Labour Day, Monday, Sept. 7, with a fresh lineup of original programming encompassing current affairs, news, science and technology, arts and comedy.
THE CURRENT with Anna Maria Tremonti (weekdays at 8:30 a.m. /9 NT) launches its 14th season with its new series , Ripple Effect, which takes an in-depth look at the often hidden consequences of decisions and accidents—events that change people’s lives, for better or worse. Anna Maria Tremonti will follow the ripples that emanate from an act of kindness, an act of malice, or a simple mistake; sometimes the most surprising stories begin only after another one ends.
q with host Shad (weekdays at 10 a.m. and 10 p.m./10:30 NT) will entertain listeners with a new lineup of interviews with high-profile celebrities, including The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde, Canadian filmmaker Deepa Mehta, Sesame Street‘s Sonia Manzano, Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallée, Child Soldier author Michel Chikwanine, and Glen Hansard, the man behind the Broadway hit Once. Friday, Sept. 11, q will feature a live performance with Canadian rap greats k-os, Kardinal Offishall, Choclair and yes Shad himself! Coverage of TIFF will include artist/musician Laurie Anderson, esteemed actor Julie Delpy, and Hollywood leading man Tom Hardy.

CBC Radio’s two new original podcasts are CAMPUS and BACK STORY:
Set on university and college campuses, the new original podcast CAMPUS launches Sept. 18 and is hosted by Albert Leung. Driven by first-person stories about the pressures to succeed, the threat of failure and the adventure of growing up, this original podcast series is a crash course on life at a time when everything is changing.
BACK STORY, launching in October, features foreign correspondents who will take you inside the biggest stories they’ve covered. First up, Adrienne Arsenault will take us on her journey covering the earthquake in Nepal last April.
Several Radio One shows celebrate milestones this season :
IDEAS , CBC Radio’s program of contemporary thought, hosted by Paul Kennedy, celebrates its 50th anniversary with a special series of programs and a public event that will be recorded for broadcast. Having engaged and sparked the minds of Canadians for so long, IDEAS invited listeners to celebrate by choosing programs that meant the most to them, and in some cases changed lives. These stories will air Fridays from Oct. 9-30 at 9 p.m. (9:30 p.m. NT). Looking ahead to the next 50 years, IDEAS will host a public event on Oct. 22 at Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, where an all-star panel of thinkers will explore new ideas around the environment, urban life, democracy and more.
QUIRKS & QUARKS with host Bob McDonald launches its 40th anniversary season with Pluto Unplugged, a feature interview with Alan Stern, the scientist behind this summer’s biggest science story: NASA’s New Horizons mission to Pluto.
WRITERS & COMPANYwith host Eleanor Watchelcelebrates 25 seasons this year, with guests that include Jonathan Franzen (Sept. 13) and Salman Rushdie. CBC Books will be featuring 25 of WRITERS & COMPANY‘s favourite interviews from the last 25 years, and there will be an anniversary show looking back at some interviews from the very first season on air, including writers who went on to become Nobel Prize-winners.
THE DEBATERS , the show where top comedians go toe-to-toe to debate issues that don’t matter, also celebrates its 10th anniversary season with host Steve Patterson.
Among other Radio One highlights, AS IT HAPPENS (Monday to Friday at 6:30 p.m./7 NT) continues with hosts Carol Off and Jeff Douglas. From conversations with newsmakers to up-close and personal accounts of the unusual and unexpected, Carol Off and Jeff Douglas bring you the stories behind the stories of the day. Host Brent Bambury is back with the sixth season of DAY 6 (Saturday at 10 a.m. / 10:30 NT), giving listeners a surprising take on the week that was. The weekly magazine show blends the best of news, current affairs, pop culture, the net, lifestyle and leisure. THE SUNDAY EDITION with host Michael Enright returns with more stimulating conversation, documentaries and music. (Sundays at 9 a.m. / 9:30 NT)
Returning to Radio One’s schedule are: WHITE COAT, BLACK ART with more stories from behind the scenes of health and health care wit host Dr. Brian Goldman (Saturdays at 1 p.m. / 1:30 NT), and THIS IS THAT, CBC’s unscripted, satirical current affairs program featuring the improv talents of Pat Kelly and Peter Oldring (Mondays at 11:30 am / 3:30 p.m. NT).
THE CBC MASSEY LECTURES , History’s People: Personalities and the Past, will air on IDEAS Nov. 2-6 at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT). This year, internationally acclaimed historian Margaret MacMillan looks at the people who shaped their times and ours: How would our world be different if Napoleon had never existed? Would we think differently without Mohammed or Luther?
