After celebrating his 80th birthday in Toronto last week, the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien joins George Stroumboulopoulos for a Canadian exclusive sit-down interview where he discusses everything from Canadian politics and Quebec’s Charter of Values, to Neil Young’s comments on the oil sands, to kite surfing at the age of 79.

This year is one of many milestones for Mr. Chrétien, whose career in public service spans 50 years. First elected as prime minister 20 years ago, he served in office for 10 years. In tonight’s interview, Chrétien shares his thoughts on Canadian politics, and as part of a broader discussion of Canadian rights, mentions in particular Quebec’s Charter of Values and its social implications.
“They talk about the tyranny of the majority in a society,” said Chrétien. “You can’t go that way. You have to look at all the aspects of the problems and make the right decision for the good of the nation.”
He also touches on Neil Young’s most recent tour across Canada, where he raised funds for the Athabasca Chipewyan band to assist in their legal battles related to the use of their land for natural resource exploitation north of Fort McMurray, Alberta. In response to Young’s statements, Chrétien explains:
“It’s good that in a democracy he can express his views. But it’s a resource that can be developed with protection for the environment,” said Chrétien. “That’s very important. But oil is oil and we still have cars and we’re not about to not need oil. We have oil that God put in the ground in Canada. We have to develop it in a responsible way.”
