CBC'S DOC ZONE TAKES AN IN-DEPTH LOOK AT THE POWER AND POLITICS OF GOLD IN THE SECRET WORLD OF GOLD, APRIL 18

THE SECRET WORLD OF GOLD premieres on CBC-TV’s Doc Zone, Thursday, April 18 at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT)

The Romans referred to gold as “the muscles of war” and throughout history this precious metal has both adorned sacred temples and driven nations to conquer and enslave their neighbours. CBC’s Doc Zone takes an in-depth look at the allure of this beautiful and precious metal, revealing the central role it has played in power and politics throughout history with THE SECRET WORLD OF GOLD airing Thursday, April 18 at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT) on CBC-TV.

Exploring alarming questions about the state of national gold reserves and the effects it has on collective wealth, THE SECRET WORLD OF GOLD takes viewers beyond conspiracy theories and into the secretive worlds of commodity trading, national banks, gold reserves, and abstract wealth untethered from the gold standard. Get the inside story, first-hand from those in the gold trade with featured interviews from bullion trader and whistleblower Andrew Maguire, Banque de France’s Didier Bruneel, CFTC Commissioner Bart Chilton and CPM Group’s Jeffrey Christian.

Pondering if all that glitters is indeed gold and whether society has placed too much stock in a fool’s gold that exists mostly on paper, THE SECRET WORLD OF GOLD, reveals a wealth of interesting secrets and little known facts about the world’s most precious metal. Find out about billions of dollars in gold coins and artifacts lying unclaimed at the bottom of the ocean, as Odyssey Marine Exploration’s Tom Dettwieler explains the lucrative but legally complex business of recovering the vast amounts of sunken treasure lying on the ocean floor.

Tune-in to The Secret World of Gold on Thursday, April 18 at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT). Written and directed by Brian McKenna.

Hosted by Ann-Marie MacDonald, DOC ZONE explores and expands on the major issues of our time. Informed, exciting and provocative, DOC ZONE presents a panoramic view of what matters most to Canadians.
