SHERMAN DOWNEY AND THE AMBIGUOUS CASE IS CBCMUSIC.CA AND CBC RADIO ONE'S BEST NEW ARTIST

The band wins the listeners’ choice competition, SEARCHLIGHT and $20,000 in music equipment from Yamaha Canada Music

After thousands of artists entered their original tracks and the public voted for their favourites, the audiences of CBCMusic.ca and CBC Radio One have crowned Sherman Downey and the Ambiguous Case as the winner of SEARCHLIGHT, the search for Canada’s best new artist.

The band has had tremendous online support from the beginning of the competition; notable Canadian celebrity fans include Shaun Majumder (This Hour Has 22 Minutes) and Shannon Tweed, who have expressed their love for Sherman Downey and the Ambiguous Case on Twitter. Hailing from Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, the band has been playing together for four years and despite playing a few tours and being nominated for a handful of East Coast Music Awards, they are still in awe of the support they’ve received throughout SEARCHLIGHT. “When a break comes along, you have to seize the opportunity,” said Downey in an open letter to fans.

“Sherman Downey and the Ambiguous Case are a more mature indie-folk band who are about as friendly, charming, and laid back as they come. That charm has really captured the hearts of their fans,” said Grant Lawerence, Host, CBC Radio 3. “They are a band that has been slogging it out for years, too. SEARCHLIGHT has provided Sherman Downey with a huge boost of national publicity, a light at the end of the indie music tunnel”.

After a staggering 1.3 million collective votes throughout the run of SEARCHLIGHT, CBC Radio One and CBCMusic.ca listeners narrowed down thousands of musical acts and decided Sherman Downey and the Ambiguous is Canada’s best new artist. The band has won $20,000 worth of music equipment from Yahama Canada Music, an opening act slot at the CBCMusic.ca Festival on May 25 at Echo Beach in Toronto including flight and accommodations, and the opportunity to record a video session to be featured on CBCMusic.ca. The band has also landed a spot on the Evolve Music Festival bill in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
