While most citizens pay their fair share of taxes, some of Canada’s richest citizens use a secretive offshore world to hide their wealth, and avoid the system. Now, in an unprecedented leak—the biggest of its kind and more than 100 times larger than Wikileaks—their secrets are revealed. As part of a global investigation, in partnership with some 40 news organizations, CBC News exposes the truth and busts open the seal into a murky world of tax havens and offshore trusts that was hidden for too long.
Beginning at 6 p.m. ET, on Wednesday, April 3, and continuing in the days and weeks ahead, CBC News exposes this world to Canadians on CBC Radio, CBC News Network, CBC Television and CBCNews.ca.
At 6 p.m., turn to CBC News Network’s POWER & POLITICS WITH EVAN SOLOMON, CBC Radio One’s WORLD AT SIX WITH ALISON SMITH, and CBCNews.ca to discover how our tax system is avoided by some of our wealthiest citizens, and how our government has done little to stop it.
Then on THE NATIONAL, in the documentary Merchant of Secrecy, Frédéric Zalac reports on offshore trusts in the Cook Islands, and narrows his investigation to a politically-connected and high-flying lawyer from Saskatchewan who’s been hiding his wealth offshore. And on Friday, April 5, Zalac reports again on THE NATIONAL with The Enablers, turning his gaze on the British Virgin Islands and its industry of offshore front companies used by organized crime and money launderers. One Toronto businessman’s financial services company is singled out—a company that enabled one of the biggest tax frauds in Russian history, known as the Magnitsky affair. The National airs at 10 p.m. (10:30 NT) on CBC-TV; 9 and 11 p.m. ET/PT on CBC News Network.
A non-profit international group of investigative reporters, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, recently received what might be the biggest data leak in history. It’s the first time the world has ever seen this much secret financial information revealed, including millions of detailed confidential documents about offshore companies and trusts set up by more than 100,000 wealthy clients around the world, with at least 450 Canadians among those named. CBC News investigates Canada’s part in who is avoiding the system and hiding their money.
