CANADIAN CARDINAL MARC OUELLET SITS DOWN WITH PETER MANSBRIDGE FOR A WORLD EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW ON CBC'S THE NATIONAL

The world exclusive interview broadcasts on THE NATIONAL over two nights, Monday March 4 and Tuesday March 5, at 10/10:30pm NT on CBC-TV and at 9 & 11pm ET/PT on CBC News Network

Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet holds one of the most powerful offices in the Catholic Church as the head of the Congregation for Bishops. Ouellet is considered a strong front runner in the “papabili”, the select small group of cardinals likely to be the next pope. Monday and Tuesday on CBC News’ THE NATIONAL, chief correspondent Peter Mansbridge sits down for a world exclusive interview with Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet at his private residence at the Vatican, focusing on the massive challenges facing the Catholic Church, and Ouellet’s feelings about the road ahead for Catholics worldwide, and his own possible path towards the papacy.

THE NATIONAL’S world exclusive interview airs Monday and Tuesday night, at 10/10:30pm NT on CBC-TV and at 9 & 11pm ET/PT on CBC News Network.

Ouellet had over 120 media requests from around the world, but only chose to sit down with Peter Mansbridge for his first and only English-language interview. In the wide-ranging conversation, the two discuss abuse scandals in the Catholic Church, whether or not Ouellet is prepared for the possibility of becoming the next pope, and reflects on his family roots in La Motte, Quebec.

As the Catholic Church elects a new leader for its roughly 1.2 billion followers, CBC News is there - on television, radio, and online - bringing Canadians the inside story from the Vatican about how the conclave unfolds, and the pressure on this powerful institution to select a forceful and inspiring new pope. Over the course of the conclave, THE NATIONAL will examine key challenges facing the Catholic Church as it enters this next chapter, and will profile the leading contenders likely to be named the next pope. With a series of exclusive and special reports from the Vatican, Rome, and around the world, CBC News will bring Canadians the stories that matter. Peter Mansbridge and Alison Smith, host of CBC Radio‘s WORLD AT SIX, will have special live coverage of the papal announcement as soon as the cardinals reach a final ballot. Turn to CBC News Network for special guest analysis, and immediate reaction from within St. Peter’s square and at home in Canada.
