UNLICENCED DAYCARES: PUTTING CHILDREN AT RISK CBC'S MARKETPLACE EXPOSES SHADY OPERATORS AND UNSAFE CONDITIONS

Who’s Watching the Kids? airs Friday, Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC-TV’s MARKETPLACE

Daycares should be one the safest places children spend their time, but on this week’s MARKETPLACE, Who’s Watching the Kids?, we reveal a patchwork system with no rules, potential dangers, and people breaking the law.

With long wait lists and high fees, licenced daycare spaces in Canada are hard to come by, leaving many parents with no option but to use unlicenced care. Anyone can start a daycare. No licence means no government oversight.

MARKETPLACE goes undercover and inside these daycares to see what goes on when parents aren’t around, if the people working with the children are qualified, and if the places trusted to look after our kids are safe.

Who’s Watching the Kids? with Erica Johnson airs on CBC News’ MARKETPLACE, Friday, Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC-TV.

Only 20 per cent of Canadian children have access to licenced care. MARKETPLACE investigates 20 of these unlicenced daycares, and discovers substandard conditions.

MARKETPLACE has been nominated for three 2013 CSA Awards, including: Best News Information Series, Barbara Sears Award for Best Editorial Research for What FX?, and for Best Direction in a News Information Program or Series for When The Repairman Knocks.

Winner of the 2011 Gemini Award for Best News Information Series, MARKETPLACE airs Fridays at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC Television. MARKETPLACE also airs Saturdays at 9:30 p.m. ET and Sundays at 5:30 p.m. ET on CBC News Network.
