From California to Dubai to Europe, meet the eclectic cast that has gone to extreme lengths to turn a profit. And in BEAUTY DAY on January 13th, meet Ralph Zavaldi, who broadcast his foolish and dark comedic stunt videos on his Southern Ontario cable access show, The Cap’n Video Show (1990-1995), which was ahead of its time and was almost a precursor to YouTube viral sensations.

HEIST (Canadian Broadcast Premiere)
Sunday, January 6th 20:00 ET/ 22:00 PT

Who stole the American Dream? HEIST reveals how American corporations orchestrated the dismantling of middle-class prosperity through rampant deregulation, the outsourcing of jobs, and tax policies favouring businesses and the wealthy. The collapse of the U.S. economy is the result of conscious choices made over thirty-five years by a small group: leaders of corporations and their elected allies, and the biggest lobbying interest in Washington, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. To these individuals, the collapse is not a catastrophe, but rather the planned outcome of their long, patient work. For the rest of the country, it is merely the biggest heist in American history.

RECESSIONIZE! FOR FUN AND FOR PROFIT! (documentary Premiere)
Tuesday, January 8th 20:00 ET

RECESSIONIZE! FOR FUN AND FOR PROFIT! tells a unique, bittersweet tale that touches on the universal ironies of modern market-guided existence. Director Jamie Kastner sets off on a black-comic road trip through California, Europe and Dubai meeting those who manage to turn the world economic crisis into opportunity. The quirky cast, at times funny, absurd, and heartrending, ranges from kids at “Camp Millionaire”, to Berlin prostitutes offering eco-discounts, to the owners of a French hotel promising a hamster experience. The present-day journey is interwoven with the ironic tales of different financial solutions people resorted to during the 1930’s Great Depression.

BEAUTY DAY (documentary Premiere)
Sunday, January 13th 20:00 ET / 22:00 PT

Ralph Zavaldi’s cable access television show, The Cap’n Video Show, ran from 1990 to 1995, spawning a small but loyal cult following. Each week Ralph performed a series of foolish and occasionally dangerous stunts, challenging the sensibilities of his small Southern Ontario audience. With the advent of the Internet and reality television still years away, his unique brand of gross-out stunt comedy was truly ahead of its time. All it took was a broken neck for him to get noticed.
