Canadian grassroots soccer stories will be featured alongsideFIFA Women’s World Cup™ action,all beginning July 9 at 11 a.m. ET
Amid quarterfinal action from theFIFA Women’s World Cup™in Germany, Canadians from coast to coast to coast can celebrate the world’s game here at home onPopsicle Soccer Day in Canada,Saturday, July 9 on CBC.
Coverage of theFIFA Women’s World Cup™quarterfinals begins at 11 a.m. ET withFIFA World Cup TodayonCBC TelevisionandCBCSports.ca. That kicks off coverage of the first quarterfinal match featuring England vs. France, followed by host Germany taking on Japan. Then, at 5 p.m. ET, Scott Russell will hostPopsicle Soccer Day in Canada.
Russell will check in on all the action in Lockhart Fields in New Minas, Nova Scotia for the Gunn Baldursson Tournament, the largest women’s soccer tournament in Canada; Slave Lake, Alberta, where residents of the recently fire-ravaged town will come together for a special community soccer event; Ottawa, featuring a USL game with the Ottawa Fury hosting the Hamilton Rage; and Toronto for the Eastern Championships of Street Soccer Canada, an organization that promotes the game to homeless and less fortunate people in the community.
Scheduled live guests include musician/author Dave Bidini (“Hope and Away - The History of the Homeless Cup”), documentary producer Allan Tong and Soccer4Hope founder Rick Gill.
Popsicle Soccer Day in Canadawill also includefeature stories from across the country, looking at ways Canadians participate in and celebrate the world’s game. Highlights include firsthand accounts of the University of Calgary women’s soccer team and their trip to South Africa to participate in clinics and donate equipment to local teams. The community of Laval, Quebec and their attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the world’s largest soccer practice, along with a special visit to the Burlington Soccer Club by former Canadian women’s national team member and CBC soccer analyst Clare Rustad, will also be featured.
