Canadian Screen Award and Comedy Award-winner Pat Thornton stars in new series

From the surreal minds of award-winning comedians Eric Toth (Still Standing, Bill and Sons Towing, The Imponderables) and Pat Thornton (Filth City, Sunnyside, Space Janitors) comes MY KITCHEN CAN BE ANYTHING, a fantasy comedy series shot entirely in Thornton‘s kitchen, that takes place anywhere but his kitchen. The 19-episode CBC original series begins streaming tonight at cbc.ca/watch and youtube.com/CBCComedy.
MY KITCHEN CAN BE ANYTHING is created and written by Eric Toth and Pat Thornton, starring Thornton with direction by Toth. The fantastical comedy is as limitless as the pair’s imagination. Filmed on location in Toronto, the kitchen morphs into mind-bending locations like the Grand Canyon, a major league baseball diamond, a rock star’s dressing room, a spacecraft and more. The series launched four well-received pilot episodes in December 2016, prompting its official premiere this month.
“We could have shot sketches at any number of locations, but how would that be different from any other sketch show?” said Thornton. “Shooting the series in my kitchen made it a thing.”
“Working within a confined space allowed us to be more imaginative than we normally would have been," said Toth. "We took a purposely static location and pretended it was literally anything but a kitchen, and limited ourselves to using things only found in that kitchen. A microwave was a computer, a hammer was a spatula and the sink was a river in the Grand Canyon. In doing that, we gave ourselves the creative freedom of a child during play-time.”
Some of Canada’s top comedians guest star in the series, including: Ben Beauchemin (Kim’s Convenience); Aurora Browne (Baroness von Sketch Show); Ennis Esmer (You Me Her); Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll (Kim’s Convenience); Brandon Hackett (The Beaverton); Nelu Handa (Almost Genius); Stephanie Kaliner (Schitt’s Creek); Peter Keleghan (Murdoch Mysteries); Craig Lauzon (Air Farce); Paloma Nuñez (Workin’ Moms); Kathleen Phillips (Filth City); Ann Pornel (Baroness von Sketch Show); Kirsten Rasmussen (Schitt’s Creek); Miguel Rivas (The Beaverton); and Kevin Vidal (Workin’ Moms).
The series features the track Salad Days written and performed by Canadian singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mac DeMarco, from the album Salad Days, which received the “Best New Music” designation from Pitchfork online magazine and was nominated for the Polaris Music Prize.
