CBC Sports to offer daily coverage including weeknight and weekend afternoon broadcasts on CBC and more than 20 hours of live-streaming at cbcsports.ca and on the CBC Sports app
CBC/Radio-Canada is the National Broadcaster of the FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, Oct. 5–8 from Montreal’s Olympic Stadium. CBC Sports will provide daily English-language television and live-streaming coverage as top gymnasts from around the world compete on Canadian soil. Competition coverage on CBC Sports platforms begins Thursday, Oct. 5 with coverage of the Men’s Individual All Around final on cbcsports.ca and via the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices at 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. PT) and on CBC at 11:30 p.m. ET (8:30 p.m. PT).
CBC Sports’ Scott Russell will host the network’s coverage of the World Championships from Montreal where he will be joined on the broadcast team by play-by-play commentator Brenda Irving, analyst and Olympic Games gold medallist Kyle Shewfelt, and reporter and Olympian Perdita Felicien. Jacqueline Doorey will cover the World Championships via the network’s social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram as well as YouTube and Snapchat.
More than 500 athletes from 80 countries will compete in Montreal over the course of the competition at what is considered the most significant event of the artistic gymnastics season. Two-time Olympian and Commonwealth Games and Pan Am Games gold medallist Ellie Black will lead the Canadian contingent, looking to improve on her fifth-place performance in the all-around from Rio 2016. Halifax native Black is among the top gymnasts in the world – she has won international medals on every apparatus, and was 7th in the all-around at the last World Championships in 2015. Joining Black on the Canadian women’s team are fellow Rio Olympians Shallon Olsen of Vancouver and Isabela Onyshko of Minnedosa, MB, and Cambridge, ON’s Brooklyn Moors. On the men’s side, Canada will be represented by Rio Olympian Scott Morgan of North Vancouver, BC; Zachary Clay of Langley, BC; René Cournoyer of Repentigny, QC; Burlington, ON’s Kevin Lytwyn; Calgary’s Jackson Payne; and Thierry Pellerin of Lévis, QC.
International teams to watch for include the perennially powerful American team who will showcase a new generation of athletes, a rejuvenated Romanian team looking to a veteran lineup to improve upon a poor showing at Rio 2016 and the team from China who will be on a mission to live up to the lofty standards their country has been known for in the world of artistic gymnastics.
