Season two focuses on stories from real people facing and fighting against food insecurity in communities across Ontario
CBC Ontario today announced the launch of the second season of HARD TO STOMACH. Hosted by the interim host of CBC Radio’s Fresh Air, Jason D’Souza, this three-episode podcast examines the interconnected issues of economic uncertainty, affordable housing and access to food amidst a global pandemic. All episodes of season two are currently available on the CBC Listen App, at cbc.ca/hardtostomach or wherever you get your favourite podcasts.
“This podcast examines the issue of hunger in our province, and what’s being done to address the root causes of the problem,” said Ruth Zowdu, Senior Managing Director, CBC Ontario Region. “Though the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all our lives, it has not affected everyone equally. With research showing 3.2 million food bank visits across Ontario this year, there's a pressing need to have these conversations.”
HARD TO STOMACH offers a unique insight into the lives of those who are facing, and fighting food insecurity. The podcast amplifies the voices of Ontarians, who — from north to south — are trying to find a better way forward. Throughout this journey, listeners will hear from those working towards food sovereignty for their communities with guests Leticia Ama Deawuo, Executive Director of the Black Creek Community Farm, and Jessica Mclaughlin, coordinator of the Indigenous Food Circle. Experts like Valerie Tarasuk and Charles Levkoe — two professors and researchers committed to examining the systemic impacts of food insecurity — provide context for the broader challenges and opportunities in addressing hunger.
Jason D’Souza joins the CBC Ontario team from CBC British Columbia. He began his CBC journey as the recipient of the Gzowski internship in 2012 and has won multiple RTDNA awards. He has worn many different hats, including backfill hosting on various CBC British Columbia Radio and television programs including The Early Edition, On the Coast, North by Northwest and Our Vancouver.
