Toronto, Ontario resident Bertie Diaz leaves the tent this week, while Calgary, Alberta’s Oyaks Airende is declared Star Baker
Season 4 of CBC’s THE GREAT CANADIAN BAKING SHOW kicked off this evening with two new hosts, Alan Shane Lewis and Ann Pornel, joining returning judges Bruno Feldeisen and Kyla Kennaley, and ten of the country’s best amateur bakers entering the iconic tent for the first time to face Cake Week.
During week one, the bakers were asked to create an individually designed Bundt Cake for the Signature Bake, a Valentine’s-themed Vertical Striped Cake for the Technical Challenge, and a three-tiered Cascade Mirror Glaze Cake for the Show Stopper. All 10 contestants proved that they were up to the challenge and prepared to take whisks, but ultimately the judges bid farewell to Bertie Diaz from Toronto, Ontario, while the honour of being named the first Star Baker of the season went to Calgary, Alberta’s Oyaks Airende.
As Bertie leaves the tent, the following bakers remain:
- Anjali Helferty, 36, a recent PhD grad from Toronto, ON
- Dominike Audet, 42, a radio host and novelist from Québec, QC
- Larry Harris, 53, a business operations manager from Edmonton, AB
- Maggie Frith, 42, a stay-at-home mom and former lawyer from Toronto, ON
- Mahathi Mundluru, 24, a business analyst from Markham, ON
- Oyaks Airende, 28, a project scheduler and engineer from Calgary, AB
- Raufikat Oyawoye, 35, an IT support engineer from Milton, ON
- Sheldon Lynn, 25, a software developer from Vancouver, BC
- Tanner Davies, 28, a marketing consultant from Winnipeg, MB
In next week’s episode of THE GREAT CANADIAN BAKING SHOW, the nine remaining bakers must prove they can rise to the occasion during Bread Week, airing next Sunday, February 21 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC and the free CBC Gem streaming service.
