New journalism roles will open in B.C, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Nunavut, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada
CBC News today announced it will expand its commitment to local news by creating 14 new journalism positions across the country, focused on deepening community connections.
“At Canada’s public broadcaster, local is the lens into all that we do,” said Susan Marjetti, General Manager of News, Current Affairs & Local, CBC. “Prioritizing local connections will help us tell more of the stories that matter most to people. These newly announced positions across the country are aimed at broadening and deepening our journalism while building relationships with regional and cultural communities.”
In the West, CBC News will hire two new Alberta-based journalists, one for Lethbridge and the other to be stationed in Grande Prairie. In British Columbia, there will be two new video journalists, one stationed in Cranbrook and another in Nanaimo.
As part of CBC’s ongoing commitment to coverage of First Nations, Métis and Inuit, CBC News will expand CBC Indigenous with two new journalistic hires, one in Manitoba and one in Saskatchewan.
CBC North is creating two new positions in Iqaluit to support Indigenous language programming.
CBC will hire a new community producer in Quebec and Atlantic Canada, increasing coverage capabilities of underserved communities in both of these regions. An Indigenous journalist position will be made permanent in Quebec to bring more stories from that province’s Indigenous communities to CBC audiences from coast to coast to coast.
In Ontario, Brampton and Kingston will each have new permanent reporters based in those communities, while a community producer will be hired to work out of CBC’s London station with the aim of building connections and strengthening CBC’s coverage across Southwestern Ontario.
The hiring process for these positions begins this Spring.
