July 13, 2023 - This summer, CBC Sports is making a splash as the exclusive Canadian home of the 2023 World Aquatics Championships, taking place in Fukuoka, Japan from Friday, July 14 through Sunday, July 30, and featuring the aquatic disciplines of swimming, water polo, diving, artistic swimming, open water swimming and high diving. Viewers can catch all the action live via the free CBC Gem streaming service, cbcsports.ca, and the CBC Sports App for iOS and Android devices, and watch broadcast coverage on CBC TV as part of CBC Sports Presents weekend programming throughout the competition. CBC Sports Presents broadcast coverage kicks off on Saturday, July 15 at 3:30 p.m. ET (12:30 p.m. PT) on CBC TV and CBC Gem, with host Scott Russell & Anastasia Bucsis breaking down the first day’s diving action. Devin Heroux will offer poolside coverage from Fukuoka, and will be joined by Olympian Roseline Filion in the role of special analyst. Olympic medallists in diving Alexandre Despatie and Jennifer Abel will provide commentary. Broadcast coverage picks up again on Saturday, July 22 and Saturday, July 29 with Andi Petrillo joining Russell as part of the studio coverage.. Paralympian Rob Snoek and Olympian Byron MacDonald will provide commentary for swimming events, Olympic medallist Brittany MacLean will serve as special analyst, and Heroux will continue to offer coverage from the pool. Snoek, MacDonald, MacLean and Heroux will also join host Anastasia Bucsis for live daily coverage of all final swim events available on CBC Gem and CBC Sports digital platforms beginning on Sunday, July 23.
Team Canada is sending a strong contingent of eight divers to Fukuoka led by returning multi-medallist Mia Vallée, whose achievements at the 2022 World Aquatics Championships marked the first time a Canadian woman finished on the podium in two individual events at the same world championships. Divers for Canada include: Pamela Ware, Caeli McKay, Kate Miller, Elaena Dick, Rylan Wiens, Nathan Zsombor-Murray and Bryden Hattie.
On the swim side, Team Canada consists of 31 swimmers, 10 who will be making their world championships debut. Last year’s championships in Budapest saw Canadian swimmers win 11 medals, the country’s most ever, and break five Canadian records. This year’s team is led by double world-record holder Summer McIntosh who is projected for greatness. She is joined by Olympic gold medallist Maggie Mac Neil, Olympic silver medallist Kylie Masse, and winner of three medals at last year’s world championships, Joshua Liendo. The team also includes: Javier Acevedo, Sophie Angus, Jeremy Bagshaw, Eric Brown, Ben Cote, James Dergousoff, Brooklyn Douthwright, Abby Dunford, Emma Finlin, Mary-Sophie Harvey, Eric Hedlin, Hanna Henderson, Edouard Fullum-Huot, Ruslan Gaziev, Collyn Gagne, Patrick Hussey, Ella Jansen, Ilya Kharun, Finlay Knox, Hugh McNeill, Emma O’Croinin, Bailey O'Regan, Taylor Ruck, Katerine Savard, Brayden Taivassalo, Lorne Wigginton, Ingrid Wilm, and Kelsey Wog.
The meet is an important step on the road to Paris 2024 as it is the first opportunity for Canada to qualify for the next Olympic Games.
