CBC RADIO ONE ANNOUNCES q's ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE CAMPAIGN

The challenge will provide a platform for Canadian artists to create new work and allow q’s audience to hear a diverse group of artists address cultural topics and themes that are important to Canadians

CBC Radio is pleased to announce its Artist-in-Residence campaign, a new and exciting project for q. q‘s team has put together a shortlist of six Canadian artists who are doing interesting and culturally relevant work. Starting today, October 27, these artists will compete to be q‘s Artist-in-Residence.

For the first round of competition, the artists were given a topic: “I’m sorry you’re offended,” and tasked with creating something in response to that topic in their respective disciplines—which include music, poetry, drama and other forms of storytelling.

The artists will share their newly-created, commissioned pieces on the show over the course of three programs, with two artists presenting their work each time. For more details please see the “Artist Appearance” schedule below. Canadians will then be given until midnight the following day to vote online at cbc.ca/q for the work they feel should win that day.

After three episodes, the list will be narrowed down to three artists. Shortly after that, on November 5, the group of three compete for the chance to be named q‘s Artist-in-Residence. The winner will be announced on the show on November 10. The Artist-in-Residence will be q‘s go-to artist for responses to cultural and artistic goings-on. They will respond creatively to stories, topics and themes and create new work for Canadians to hear on q.

The six artists are:

Amiel Gladstone - Vancouver - Playwright and theatre director.
Humble the Poet - Toronto - spoken word poet, rapper
Tamara Lindeman (The Weather Station) - Toronto - musician
Drew Hayden Taylor - Curve Lake First Nation - playwright/journalist/author
Katherena Vermette - Winnipeg - poet/author
Adrienne Wong - Ottawa - theatre artist/actor

Artist appearance schedule:
Tuesday, October 27 - Group A - Tamara vs. Adrienne
Thursday, October 29 - Group B - Amiel vs. Drew
Tuesday, November 3 - Group C - Katherena vs. Humble
Thursday, November 5 - Round Two - Winners of A, B, C
Tuesday, November 10 - q‘s new Artist-in-Residence is announced
